Tunbridge Well’s full title is Royal Tunbridge Wells which dates back to 1909 and King George VII. There is only one other town in the UK with royal in the title - Royal Leamington Spa. Tunbridge Wells in 2001 had a population of about 45k residents, whilst the borough had just over 104k.
In 2006 Tunbridge Wells held its 400th anniversary of the town, which is twinned with Wiedbaden in Germany.
The discovery of the Chalybeate spring in 1606 was the foundations of the town. Due to the high iron content it quickly became known as a spa town. The spring which is in the Pantiles district can still be accessed today. The town took its name from nearby Tonbridge.
In the Channel 4 TV program Best and Worst places to Live, Tunbridge Wells was voted third best place to live in 2006.
In summer 2007 the average price for property sold was around £255k, which is higher than the national average. Most of the homes here are semi detached, which account for around a third. The average price of a semi detached property was £280k.
