The south east English county of Kent contains the two cities of Kent and Canterbury. It would be easy to assume that the county town would be Kent but it is in fact Maidstone. Rochester used to be a city and there are moves being made to restore this title as it was actually lost by an administrative error in 1998. The county borders on to East Sussex, Essex, Surrey and Greater London. Technically it also has a border with France in the middle of the English Channel.
The area became famous as the setting for Chaucer?s Canterbury Tales. Kent?s situation on the English Channel has made it vulnerable to attack ? in the seventeenth century its coastline was fortified against attack, mainly from the Dutch and French, and local airfields played a pivotal role during The Battle of Britain whilst many of its towns were bombed by the German Luftwaffe.
